Shishio Makoto is a former Ishin Shishi hitokiri known within the ranks as the Battōsai's successor. But after his "comrades" in the government attempted and failed to assassinate him, Shishio Makoto spent the next decade slowly amassing power and developing an anti-government militia headed by his own private group of elite warriors - the Juppongatana. Shishio is the main antagonist of the Kyoto arc.

Villians Being Awesome: Shishio Makoto vs Kenshin Himura

In the Meji era a former Hitokiri Battosai by the name of Shishio sought to overturn the newly founded government, seeing it as too weak to endure. As a Battosai who had done countless murders to found the Meji government, his existence posed a threat  to the new regime so he was burned alive supposedly killing him. He survived however, albeit with his body now unable to regulate his internal temperature, giving him a 15 minute maximum in combat. The original Hitokiri Battosai, Kenshin Himura confronts him in an attempt to end his plans....

Kenshin falls unconscious due to this and several of his comrades step in to help, but to no avail. Kenshin then attempts his ultimate technique....

The time limit is up and Shishio is consumed by his own ambitions and flames....
